The O3 PLUS Project seeks to ensure that young people in higher and tertiary education institutions (HTEIs) realize positive health, education, and gender equality outcomes through sustained reductions in new HIV infections, unintended pregnancy and sexual and gender-based violence. A health facility assessment was therefore commissioned by UNESCO to provide comprehensive information on the status of health service delivery for young people in these HTEIs and make recommendations for informed decision making and investments. It covers infrastructural issues; institutional arrangements; registration of health centres; service provision; and functionality and human resource capacity. This helped towards identification of opportunities and gaps in these areas to guide appropriate recommendations

Kyooto is a unique and innovative platform developed under the O3 Plus project at Ndejje University. The word "Kyooto" is derived from a traditional gathering around a fireplace, where communities come together to share stories, knowledge, and experiences. Inspired by this concept, the Kyooto Innovation creates a safe, interactive space for students to engage in open conversations on key issues affecting their lives, particularly around health, relationships, and personal development.
The Kyooto platform is designed to address critical issues that young people face in today’s world. By facilitating discussions on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), life skills, mental health, and gender-based violence (GBV), Kyooto aims to:
Kyooto sessions are held regularly on campus, where students gather to discuss various health and life topics in an informal, open setting. These sessions may take place in person or virtually, allowing for flexibility and wider participation. Students, peer educators, and faculty members participate in these conversations, creating a diverse pool of perspectives.
During each session, a trained facilitator leads the discussion, ensuring it remains informative, respectful, and engaging. Topics can range from sexual and reproductive health, consent, mental health, and relationship dynamics, to gender equality and empowerment. These sessions not only provide vital information but also empower students to voice their concerns and share their personal experiences.
The Kyooto Innovation has already made a significant impact at Ndejje University:
Ndejje University plans to expand the Kyooto Innovation by integrating digital tools to reach even more students, including those from remote campuses. There are also plans to introduce special Kyooto sessions focusing on topics such as leadership, financial literacy, and career development, further enhancing the overall life skills and preparedness of students.
By blending tradition with modern health education, Kyooto is helping shape informed, empowered, and resilient young leaders ready to contribute positively to their communities and beyond.
